The Artist: Peter Poskas

Peter Poskas was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1939, attending Paier School of Art in New Haven, CT and the University of Hartford in Hartford, CT. Awarded Connecticut Artist of the Year in 1995, his works are held in numerous private and public collections throughout the U.S. Peter’s earliest awareness of art came from magazine illustrations. He received his first set of oil paints when he was twelve and used these to copy George Durrie’s idyllic winter scenes from the annual Travelers Insurance calendars. Originally declaring a Forestry and Wildlife Management major in college, he decided to switch to art during the next three years. Initially pursuing commercial art, his true interest lay with painting and he transferred to the Hartford Art School to begin formal training as a fine artist. The content, style, and structure of Peter’s work evolved slowly over the years as he explored different formats, materials and methods. Central to this process of discovery was his interest in small rural farms, a subject central to the bulk of his early works. John Arthur, the noted art critic, has said of Peter's paintings, “...their faithful tone, color, and rendering are called forth to conjure the most subtle and fleeting moments of season and light. And that, precisely, is the matter of their magic.”
