The Artist: Barbara James

Barbara James was born in the United Kingdom in the 1960’s and growing up in this flower power era certainly had an effect on the use of colour in her paintings. However, as a young child although James loved to paint she became somewhat deflated as she was unable to get the beautiful images in her mind translated onto the paper and in her own words  ‘The vivid colours and wild images filling my head would not flow out onto the paper. I was the artistic equivalent of being tone deaf, and after months of frustration I finally gave up.’

With her love of bright colours and drama, James took refuge in the dressing up box instead and ended up studying to complete a degree in Music, Dance and Drama at Middlesex Polytechnic. When doing some drawings for costumes for Hamlet which were apparently nothing less than scribbles, James’s tutor saw potential and encouraged her to be more creative in the use of textiles and colours. James credits her tutor Malcolm for giving her the courage to experiment by teaching her in a non conventional way; however she did not share his faith in her artistic abilities and moved on from Poly to a brief stint in Theatre and then began her career in television.

After years of success enjoying and working in television, James was inspired to have a go at painting again after looking at a view from her rented home in Lymington, Hampshire towards the end of the 1990’s. Within six months James was a finalist in the national competition held by the Artist and Illustrator’s magazine; however tragedy was to strike as James developed a serious illness. Strangely the illness gave her the break needed to spend time on her art in the peace and solitude needed to recover from it. Fate gave James the unexpected chance to really perfect her craft and was soon selling originals of her work through various galleries and WHSmith picked one of her paintings to appear on a card range and it sold over 20,000 copies in the first year.

As a relative newcomer to the world of art, James certainly seems to be making up for lost time, quite often working on several paintings at any one time. The 1960’s influence can be seen in all her work with her love of depth and texture and radiant colour. Barbara states ‘It’s been quite a journey since infant school but I'm finally beginning to get those pictures out of my head and onto canvas.’
