The Artist: Susan Crawford

Susan Crawford was born in 1941 in the Scottish district of East Lothian. She lived on a farm with her parents who trained racehorses for a living, thus much of her childhood was spent on or with a horse.

Crawford was educated in Scotland, England and Switzerland before spending two years studying classical drawing at the school of Signorini Nera Simi in Florence. She is however, completely self taught as a painter and developed her skills by using a classical old master technique of applying oil in thin glazes. A devastating flood hit Florence and Crawford left to go to Ireland and was there for two years. She did many horse portrait commissions and although self taught as a painter, the hard work studying drawing gave her the strict discipline and observation needed in her work as a painter. Crawford's main inspiration came from the works of George Stubbs and Sir Alfred Munnings. During this period Crawford also travelled to the USA and painted various horses for Paul Mellon and Jock Whitney.

Crawford has painted twenty one Epsom Derby winners and steeple chasers including Red Rum and Desert Orchid. Crawford is equally established as a portrait artist and has painted five members of the Royal family, including a painting of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother which was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery. Many other portraits form part of the Royal Collection today and 'We Three Kings', a painting of Red Rum, Arkle and Desert Orchid is a worldwide best selling print.

Crawford has also enjoyed sell out success with three shows at the Tryon Gallery in 1972, 1980 and 2001. After living for a time in the Middle East, Crawford has returned to Southern England where she continues to paint and spends her spare time indulging in her favourite pastimes of horse racing, birds, shopping for antiques and is rarely without a dog or two for company.
