John Dumigan was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1968 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art. He graduated in 1991 with a BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting and soon after began working as a community artist teaching drawing, painting and mosaic to both adults and children.
Between 1994 and 2000, Dumigan's attention was primarily on Scottish solo art and gallery exhibitions where his work was shown in galleries all across Scotland. Subsequently his work was commissioned by hospitals, health and community centres and also the private sector. It was during these early years that Dumigan designed site-specific artwork for a number of clients in these sectors, as well as for penthouse suites, offices and private homes.
From 2000 onwards, Dumigan began working more regularly with commercial and corporate clients. His skills and experience in the commercial and retail sector are widely recognised and prove invaluable to his clients, who include interior designers, retailers and restaurants, where he works on a consultancy basis. Dumigan also take commissions for private homes and continues to sell his original works but has also extended his interests into the commercial bespoke picture framing and print industry.
Dumigan continues to paint a diverse range of images in a variety of mediums including oils, pastels and acrylic. His work covers a wide range of subjects including landscapes and seascapes of Scotland, contemporary flower paintings as well as more abstract work. John's work continues to evolve in subject and style whilst he continues to experiment with new techniques, mediums and ideas.
In this personal statement, Dumigan gives us an insight into his creative approach and also his influences.
"My images are diverse, from landscapes and seascapes of my native Scotland to Latin American dancers, contemporary flower paintings, abstracts and Eastern images of Temples, Eastern landscapes and Buddha's. Many are painted in oils, and more recently pastels, egg tempera and acrylic. The work continues to change in style and subject, experimenting with new techniques and ideas. The complete works span several years, from 1997. My esoteric work is influenced by Eastern philosophy and the esoteric writings of Torkom Saraydarian".
