The Artist: Bernadette Lopicki

A self-taught artist, I have been painting since childhood. It is only after years of maturation that I developed a personal style. I spent my youth in a mining area, near Lens, in the Pas de Calais. We did not have access to contemporary art and it is at the library that I discovered my first painters. Courses I took at an arts academy taught me the fine points of composing a painting and working with oils. At 27, I moved to the Paris area and the discovery of the great national museums was a real watershed. There are so many ways to express oneself, then? For many years, I searched and searched. Visiting important exhibitions and contemporary art markets became my best education. I discovered mixed media. Using pigments and acrylics has since brought me great joy. They allow me much freedom. Finally, after experimenting with various schools for the past 20 years, I have come to define my projects. So, I work according to certain themes. Since 1999, my favorite subject has been the Mediterranean. I draw on the memories and sensations gleaned in my travels.
