Maija Baynes was born in Hameenlinna, Finland. She moved to the United States when she was seven and spent the rest of her childhood in Atlanta, GA. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1964 and continued her studies at the Pailer School of Art in Connecticut, and then at the University of South Florida. Maija’s early career was spent teaching art and remedial reading in the Georgia and Florida school systems. Later, she designed needlepoint canvases for the NeedleBug Company of Virginia. Maija has been exhibiting her art for over 26 years, and she loves it. She has been fortunate to have been the recipient of numerous awards, and has been asked to participate in many invitational exhibits sponsored by fine art galleries, museums, and academia. Over that period of time, her art has been added to collections throughout the world. Though she presently works entirely in oils, Maija is also a skilled watercolor painter. In 1986, she was accepted into the prestigious National Watercolor Society as a Signature Member and has won over 100 awards for her work in this medium.
