Ingrid Abery was born in London in the late 1960’s. She grew up in Sussex where her childhood was spent by the sea, and thus began an artistic career at a very young age. Abery was always drawn to the sea often photographing and painting it which progressed to sculpting and even some stone carving later on.
Abery studied at the Bath Academy of Art where she took a degree in Fine Art – Sculpture and Photography. Despite moving away from Sussex her first love was always the sea and she remained an active water sports player, also turning her hand to windsurfing and sailing. Abery was also a regular “hand” on modern and classic racing yachts and this is where she began to capture the action on the water.
Abery is used to the most testing of conditions often hanging out of a fast moving chase boat, with 28 knot winds, lashings of rain and 6 feet waves to contend with, whilst photographing the best sailors in the world. Abery’s days are often spent covering anything from power boating, barefoot water skiing, the Olympics to the beautiful Caribbean, which all add up to being the inspiration behind the work of this sculptor turned photographer. Any assignment with the promise of this kind of adrenaline buzz is sure to take Abery’s interest.
Abery is inspired by Bill Brandt, Man Ray, Herb Ritts and Bert Hardy, although her own approach to photography is different. Abery likes to utilise extreme angles, lenses, light and shape to achieve her own individual approach which she calls “sculpting with light and form”.
Abery describes herself as a photographer and nautical journalist and has exhibited throughout the UK with her work featuring in various nautical magazines around the world. She maintains a comprehensive library of water and land based images with clients ranging from the world of advertising to banking industries and IT.
