Sir Samuel Luke Fildes

Biography

Born in 1844, Samuel Fildes started as an illustrator and began painting in 1870, treating scenes which combined realism and genre, concentrating on subjects illustrating poverty and deprivation.

Exhibiting at the Royal Academy during the second half of the 19th Century, Fildes was a prestigious English artist whose work illuminated the social conditions of the time. He died in 1927.
