Manuel Hughes

Biography

For over 30 years Manuel Hughes has been creating still-life paintings depicting the quirky household objects he has collected. He plays with the formal relationships within the composition on canvas and with the telling, sometimes humorous, subtext created through the arrangement of these pieces.

From draped fabrics to antique cans, toys, instruments and boxes, his straightforward portrayal of ordinary items set against a nondescript background asks the viewer to share in the pleasure he takes in each peculiar and unique form. The objects change, but the expressive intent is constant: to capture empirical reality revealing an inner light.
